Olaf Wilbert Thomas, III, of Brook Park, was charged with four counts of assault and robbery to Dwaine Palmer of Hinckley. According to the Pine County criminal complaint filed December 4 Thomas, 21, and two other males attacked and robbed Palmer shortly after 6:00 am on November 29 while walking his dog near his home. Thomas is charged with three counts of assault in the second and third degrees for the attack on Palmer in which the three men “punched and kicked him, including stomping his head, using their hands and feet as dangerous weapons.” The attack caused “numerous fractures to Palmer’s skull, jaw and face.” After Palmer was seriously beaten to the ground, the men “stole his cell phone from his pocket.” Deputy Scott Grice of the Pine County Sheriff’s Office took the complaint from Palmer, who was being treated at Pine Medical Center and later at North Memorial Hospital. The two, second degree assault counts (one for aiding and abetting) each hold a maximum sentence of seven years and/or $14,000. The third degree aiding and abetting assault count has a five year and/or $10,000 maximum. The aiding and abetting simple robbery count holds a maximum sentence of ten years and/or $20,000. According to Pine County Chief Deputy Steve Ovick, Thomas met the $100,000 bail fee on December 7. “Someone came up with the $10,000 (ten percent down), which they do not get back,” said Ovick. Palmer and his wife have been notified of Thomas’ release. His next Pine County court appearance is December 18. Thomas’ two accomplices remain at large. “We are actively working on the investigation to see if we can find the other two,” said Ovick. “They are not in custody at this time.”
