Circus caravan

EddieJanePelkeyEver wonder what happens to the Circus when it leaves town? When you were a child did you ever want to run off and join the Circus? If you still have a desire to see circus life as it was and is, take a little trip to Baraboo¸ Wisconsin. What does Baraboo have in common with Sarasota¸ Florida? Travel southeast and find out!

My brother Kelly and his wife, Pam have a home in Lodi, Wisconsin. When I visit one of my destinations is Baraboo. There is a bakery there with European Breads that will knock your socks off. There is also a very wonderful museum: the ome of Ringling

Ringling Brothers Circus Museum. There are numerous buildings, displays, and fabulous collection of old circus cars.

When the circus arrived in town, there was usually an entourage of many railroad cars with all of the circus equipment. There were cars which housed the circus performers, cars held the circus business personnel, and cars which held the animals. It is the animal cars which fascinated children and adults all around the country. The arrival of the circus train would bring out the whole town. It was a celebration of sorts. The circus was the main attraction for miles around. Visitors would come to the shows to see the many acts, the wild animals, and the trapeze artists on the high wires. Clowns would have the children gapping in awe as they performed their many antics for the crowds.

The Circus coming to town was THE BIG EVENT OF THE YEAR. If you take a trip to Baraboo you can fill up with the nostalgia of the circus era. The amount of circus artifacts is astounding.

When we were cruising around Baraboo, basically looking at the number of building which house this museum, we saw flatbed trucks hauling in old circus wagons. We stopped to talk to the workers who were unloading the wagons. There were a number of trucks returning these wagons from a trip to Hollywood. There is a film being made about the circus and these cars had been rented to 20th   Century Fox for the picture.

The cars were phenomenal. They are retired animal cage cars which were used to display the Lions, Tigers, Big Cats of other breeds, Bears, Elephants, Horses, and various Monkeys. What would a Clown be without a sidekick Monkey?

To answer the question about Baraboo and Sarasota¨ both of these cities are homes of Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus. Baraboo housed the summer home of the circus and Sarasota housed the winter home of the circus. Both of  these cities have museums dedicated to circus life. Visiting the circus can be part of your vacations plans no matter if you want to go next door to Wisconsin, or you plan a winter trip to Florida. You can get your circus fix in either place.

Personally, I pick Baraboo. I can get there in six hours and there are enough Ringling attractions to keep you busy. Did you know there is an Al Ringling Theater? There is Ringling home, although there are no longer tours there. The city of Baraboo has a number of attractions that can keep you and the children occupied for quite a few days. The Wisconsin Dells are right next door, so to speak.

In these budget conscious days a trip down the road is a great choice.
