EARL WILLIAM WEVLEY
Earl William Wevley, son of Karl and Carolina (Amundson) Wevley, was born September 14, 1924, in Winneshiek County, Iowa. Earl’s family moved to Barnesville, MN in 1929. In 1939, the family moved to Morris, MN and Earl worked as a farmhand for area farmers. On December 28, 1944, Earl entered the US Army and served as a gun crewman on heavy artillery in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on July 31, 1946. Earl was united in marriage to Leola Marie Kussatz on February 11, 1946; seven children were born to this union. From 1954 to the 1990s, Earl farmed in Framnas Township, Stevens County, MN. He was a skilled welder and was considered by many to be one of the best plowmen in the area. Earl enjoyed the outdoors and was proud of his Norwegian heritage. Earl was a member of the Morris American Legion and the VFW and served as a commander of the VFW. He also served as the Framnas Township supervisor for many years and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Morris; most recently he attended First English Lutheran Church Services at the nursing home. Earl moved to a nursing home after encountering health issues and was currently residing at Green Pines Acres Nursing Home in Menahga, MN, where he died on Sunday, September 27, 2009 at the age of 85 years.
Earl is survived by children Vernon (Leona) of Moorhead; Alice (Dennis) Pietrek of Sturgeon Lake; Willard (Paula) of Menahga; David of St Louis Park; Eric (Karla) of Stoughton, WI; and Aaron of Willmar; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by brothers and sisters: Melvina Larson of Morris; Delbert Wevley of Kingston, KS; Darlene (Doyle) Wald of Springfield, OR; Ione Quam of Ashby; Knute (Joann) Wevley of Apple Valley; and Mary (Dean) Pasche of Ashland, OR. He was preceded in death by parents, Karl and Carolina; wife, Leola; son, Lars; sisters Gertrude Wevley, Gladys Hatlestad, and Violet Miller; brothers Iver, Carl, Oren, and Raymond.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at the Wevley Funeral Chapel in Sebeka, MN. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, October 5, 2009 at First Lutheran Church in Morris with visitation at the church two hours prior to the service. Pastor Todd Mattson and Pastor Steven A. Bruer will officiate. Deb Mahoney will serve as Organist. Special music will be provided by Robin Allebach. Active Casketbearers will be his children. The Charles Leuthard VFW Post #5039, The American Legion Walter Tripp Post #29 and AmVets of Morris will provide Military Honors. Interment will be at the Summit Cemetery in Morris. Arrangements were entrusted to Wevley Funeral Home of Sebeka, MN.
Memorials may be given to First Lutheran Church, Stevens County Historical Society, or Morris VFW Baseball in honor of Earl.
