Smokey the bear

Willow River teacher Erin Nordstrom and first graders greet Smokey the Bear, who made a final appearance before hibernating during an October 14 field trip to the DNR station in Sandstone.

The first graders of Willow River Elementary School went on a field trip October 14, 2009 covering locations around the area specific to their neighborhood, weather background, and fire prevention week. The first stop was to the Department of Natural Rresources station in Sandstone, where they were met by Dave and Bill, a wildlife expert. He showed the first graders numerous animals and furs, giving the children background information about the animals and the care given creatures when they are hurt. Students learned about lynx, wild turkeys, owls, and fishers to name a few of the animals.

The outing raised awareness of fire prevention week, signs of wildlife and neighborhood adventures.

The adventure continued when the first graders viewed some of the equipment that the DNR station uses to put out forest fires. And Smokey the Bear made one of his final appearances before his big hibernation for the season. The children left happy and informed, with tote bags filled with goodies from the station.

The next stop along the trip was the Hinckley Airport, where the youngsters learned about weather forecasting with radar and special computers. They took a tour of the airport and hanger and were treated to a special viewing of a plane taking off and landing.

Coincidentally, Brian is also the owner of the Grand Cinema in Hinckley, and he opened the theater to the children for a special showing of "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs," a silly spin on how weather works. The group felt lucky to experience a trio of adventures in their own "backyard."
