ELLEN LILLIAN LEPPIOJA

Ellen Lillian Leppioja, 88, Kettle River, died Friday, December 11, 2009 in Mercy Health Care Center, Moose Lake. She was born on June 21, 1921 to David and Lillian Kivi in Kalevala Township where she grew up and attended Kalevala School. Ellen later attended and graduated from Barnum High School. On July 29, 1961, Ellen married Jalmer Leppioja in Moose Lake. She worked at the Post Office in Kettle River, Diamond Match in Cloquet, and Litton Industries in Hibbing and later worked at the Kettle River Coop.

Ellen was a member of the Kettle River American Legion Auxiliary and had served on the Mercy Hospital Board and the Kalevala Township Board where she served as secretary. She was a very hard worker through the years. Ellen loved music, poetry, and animals.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband: Jalmer on October 7, 2009; son: Robert Kankaala; sister: Helen Antilla; and her parents.

She will be lovingly remembered by her son: David (Ronnie) Kankaala of Cambridge; four grandchildren:

Steve Kankaala, John Kankaala, Eric Kankaala, and Justin Kankaala; and numerous great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at 1:00 PM in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake. Burial was in Holy Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Kettle River. To sign the guestbook online, go to www.hhkfuneralhome.com.
