Ville Mattala (#9) had two goals nad an assist.
Ville Mattala and Dylan Peterson each had a three-point night as the Moose Lake Area Rebels bested the Minneapolis West boys hockey team by a 5-1 score at Riverside Arena on Fri., Dec. 18. Mattala had two goals and an assist and Peterson had three assists. Austin Lanoue nearly had shutout in goal as the Rebels outshot West 32-24 in the game. Lanoue’ saves percentage for the rough and tumble game came out to .958. There were a dozen penalties in the game as action heated up particulary in the third period. MLA might have had the most penalties with seven and each of those on separate players, but the Rebels came out of the deal with one power play goal and one short handed to cap off an overall solid performace. Period by period, the Rebels outshot West 9-8, 10-10 with the big difference coming in the final frame at 13-6. There was only one penalty and one goal in the first period. Spencer Clough caught a trip call at 8:11. Mattala gave the Rebels a 1-0 lead at 3:38 as the flying Finn scored unassisted. Two Rebels took the first two calls of the second stanza and one resulted in a goal. Mattala got a tripping call at 13:44. West cashed in at 5:09 on the power play. Zach Austin scored on assists by Dylan Kiskila and Newton Fuller for 1-1. Nick Dougherty was the next to go for cross checking at 12:49. The Rebels took back the lead with an assisted goal as Chris Gassert scored on an assist from Peterson at 9:33 for 2-1. West’s Ian Whitehead went for cross checking at 3:45. It took little time for the action to heat up in a fairly frenetic final frame. The first to go was West’s Fuller for tripping at 15:46. Things calmed down for a while, but at 8:52, the Finn’s second goal of the game came on Peterson’s second assist. Michael Unzen also got an assist on the play for 3-1. West’s Austin went for an elbow at 5:23. MLA’s Peterson was sent packing for interference at 3:53. A West player and Zach Cisar went nearly back to back for roughings at 1:47 and 1:05. Hayden Hoffmann scored a power play goal for 4-1. Mattala and Peterson earned their third and second point of the night, respectively as they were on the assists as time wound down. But the action stayed hot and heavy. The game’s only coincidental penalty was called with 56 seconds remaining. Peterson and Jack Behm took a seat for high sticking. It was still not quite over. Unzen went off for cross checking. The Rebels polished off a decent night of outskating, outshooting and outscoring West. The final tally was on a short-handed goal by Rejean Carlson. Adam Ryan earned the assist as MLA and Lanoue had a very solid 5-1 victory. The Rebels are not back at home until when they meet Minneapolis East. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. at Riverside Arena. There is a JV game scheduled prior to the varsity game for thoase who might wish to start of the New Year with a double header of hockey.
