basketball action

Josh Hogan scored 17 points and was 8 - 10 at the line.

Al RoseJosh Hogan’s 8-for-10 free throw shooting in the second half helped the Bombers beat the Aitkin Gobblers by 56-46 in Barnum on Tues., Dec. 15. Barnum remained undefeated, at 4-0, with the victory.

Barnum trailed 28-27 at the break. Hogan, who finished with 17 points, also added a free throw in the first half. Taylor Carlson was tied for game-high with Aitkin’s Nick Sundholm as they each scored 18 points.

Rebounding was an important factor in Barnum’s success as the Bombers beat the Gobblers on the boards 11 to 5 in the first half and 18 to 8 in the second half for a significant 29-13 difference in the game. On the other hand, it was the Gobblers pecking away for 15 steals in the game compared to 10 take-aways for the Bombers as Barnum was able to survive 23 turnovers compared to 16 lost possessions for Aitkin.

Barnum got good scoring support from Nick White with 11 points, including three the Bombers’ five three-pointers and from Justin Newman, who hit two threes as part of his eight points. Andrew Youngren added a bucket for Barnum.

Back to the boards, it was Carlson leading the way as the strong 6’ 1” senior was one digit away from a double-double with nine rebounds to go along with his team-high 18 points. Newman was good on the glass as well with seven rebounds and Hogan hung high to grab six boards. Andrew Youngren had three rebounds and Bobby Minkkinen took care of pair with White and Jacob Naslund each contributing one collection.

Aiktin’s Sundholm, with his co-game high 18 points, including two three-pointers, was the lone Gobblers to reach double digits. Ray Smith was held to nine points and the 6’ 5” senior was limited to five boards. Andrew Welshons had eight points, including to threes. Kylan Hill had five points, inlcuding one three-pointer, and a rebound. Jaron Brexinsky had four points and Tom LaLond added a bucket. Ryan Abraham had five boards for the Gobblers.

The pesky Gobblers did win the battle of the steals. Sundholm and Abraham each had four thefts. Brezinsky, Smith and Kyle Hoffmann each had two take-aways and Andrew Welshons had one steal.

Neither team was particularly noteable in the play-making department as White and Hogan each fired a pair for Barnum and Sundholm, Welshons and Abraham each had one readily apparent assist for Aitkin.

White had two big blocks for Barnum while Carlson put a cap on one Gobbler shot. Smith and Hill each had one block for Aiktin.

Shooting stats in the first half showed how close that half was. While Aiktin had the edge from outside the arc, Barnum took better care of business inside the lane. The Gobblers were able to drain four of nine threes (44 percent). The Bombers got just two of eight long ones to go (25 percent). Overall, the teams had indentical percentages at 52 percent with Aiktin at 11-for-21 and Barnum at 12-for-23 for the first half.

The Gobblers’ Sundholm made both of his free throws. Hogan converted a three-point play, with Aiktin holding the razor thin 28-27 lead at intermission.

Aiktin cooled off cnsiderably outside the arc in the second half, making only 1-for-11 (9 percent). Barnum improved to 3-for-7 (43 percent). Although the teams shot the same rates on the inside game, at 38 percent each, it was the Bombers at 6-for-16 compared to the Gobblers at 5-for-13. Total shooting percentage in the second half found the Bombers hanging in there at 9-for-23 (39 percent) while the Gobblers dipped severely to just 6-for-24 (25 percent).

While Aiktin was solid at the line with 5-for-6 shooting in the second half, Barnum ended up with three more points at the stripe as it went 8-for-11, including Hogan’s excellent 8-for-10 in the second half to help assure the 10 margin of victory.

The 4-0 Bombers play Two Harbors at home on Tues., Dec. 29 with the varsity tip set for 7:30 p.m.
