Taylor Mattison takes it to the hoop
The Rebels dominated in six statistical categories as they nearly doubled up the Two Harbors with a big 67-36 win in Moose Lake on Tues., Dec. 22. ML-WR put three players in double figures while allowing only one Agate to hit double digits. Austin Jacobson led all scorers with 13 points, including one of the Rebels four three-pointers. The lightening quick senior guard added three rebounds, but led the game in steals with seven spiffy picks. Jacobson with another fine all-around effort, also paced the Rebels in the passing department as he fired four sizzlers for scores. Taylor Mattison was back in fine form. The sophomore came off the bench for 12 points, three boards, two steals and three assists. Lucas Probst just missed another double-double as the tall senior hit for 10 points, including one three-pointer, and had a game-high eight rebounds. Probst added one steal. The Rebels got good scoring and other support from three players. Caleb Koecher was very solid on both ends of the court. The sophomore forward hit for eight points, had seven rebounds, three steals, two assists and he blocked two shots. Ryan Adamczak stayed strong in his starting role. Adamczak had seven points, including a three-pointer. He grabbed seven big boards and tossed three nice assists. Moose Lake-Willow River had decent additional support as well. Rudy Ketchum, with one sharp three-pointer, finished with five points. Ketchum also ripped down two boards. Nick Tokar came in for four points and two rebounds. Jeff Hanson added two rebounds. Jacob Drewlo tossed one assist. Tyler Huso hustled for a rebound and Zach Wohlstrom blocked a shot. The Agates were able to put only one player in double figures. Three sport senior star Ryan Guentzel showed his strength and all-around athleticism. Guentzel had a team leading 10 points. Guentzel also paced his team in boards with four and in steals with four while adding one assist. Jon McDannold hit the Agates lone three-pointer and finished with seven points. McDannold added two rebounds, two steals and one assist. Jon Plageman had six points, two rebounds, and one steal. Cole Myrdal also had six points and he added one rebound. Jake Iskat had a bucket and three boards. Chad Brelie and Alex Horoshak each had one bucket. Caleb Hamp-Sill hit one free throw and had two rebounds. Hamp-Sill added one steal and one assist. The Rebels had pretty good figures when it came to shooting percentages. ML-WR had one of it better halves of the season outside the arc as it hit for 3-for-5 (60 percent) in the first half. The Agates were blanked from downtown in the first half at 0-for-3. ML-WR cooled off in the second half from outside as it hit just one of three attempts (33 percent). The Rebels came out at a good 4-for-8 (50 percent) for the game on the long ones while the Agates suffered only 1-for-6 (17 percent) for the game on threes.
Much of ML-WR’s scoring was on the inside. The first half was decent in terms of sheer numbers of shots at 12-for-36 (33 percent). Two Harbors held a bit a percentage lead, but not on the scoreboard, at 8-for-21 (38 percent). Combined field goal shooting for the first half, the Rebels went 15-for-41 (37 percent) while the Agates were just 8-for-24 (33 percent). The second half was similar as the Rebels improved slightly and went 12-for-27 (44 percent) in the paint while the Agates slipped a bit to 7-for-21(33 percent). Combined field goal shooting in the second half found the Rebels 13-for-30 (43 percent) while Agates were able muster only 8-for-24 (33 percent). Combining the three and the two for the halves, ML-WR went 28-for-71 (39 percent). The Agates totalled just 16-for-48 (33 percent) for game. The Rebels added 3-for-6 at the foul stripe in the first half while the Agates went 0-for-2. ML-WR came up with a 4-for-6 second half at the line (67 percent) to wind up at at an only fair 7-for-12 (58 percent). The Agates had only 3-for-10 stripe success in the second half for a dismal 3-for-12 (25 percent) at the line in the game. Rebounds were a very significant factor in ML-WR’s favor. The much-taller Rebels used height, strength and quickness to dominate the boards at 20-7 in the first half and 17-7 in the second half for a very impressive 37-14 advantage in the game. ML-WR also showed its tenacity in the steals department. The Rebels had a 9-5 advantage in the first half and a 5-3 edge in the second half for 14-8 on the thefts for the game. Finally, the Rebels proved some finese with their passing. ML-WR had a 9-2 first half and a 5-1 second half for 14 readily apparent assists in the game compared to just three notable scoring plays for the Agates. The one place the Rebels did not shine was in taking care of the basketball. ML-WR would likely have won the game by an even larger margin had they not committed a dozen miscues in the first half and eight more in the second half for a not-to-terrific 20 turnovers in the game. But the Agates also had 12 in first half and six in the second half, so it pretty much balanced out. Neither team played that great of a game in terms of lost possessions. The Rebels host the final game of their Invite on Wed., Dec. 30 at 5 p.m. NOTE: That game is in Willow River After that, it’s Cook County back at home for an early 6:30 p.m. game in Moose Lake on Tues., Jan. 5, 2010 and McGregor on Fri., the 8th. at the usual 7:30 p.m. tip time. A big match-up with the undefeated Bombers in Barnum looms on the horizon for Tues., Jan. 12 at 7:30 p.m. Fans might want to arrive early for that great Polar League rivalry game.
