by Jennie K. Hanson 357-2385

As I sit down to write this week’s news thousands of Minnesotans are reeling from the Viking’s loss on Sunday.  The sun did come up on Monday, but of course we didn’t see it as it has been so cloudy lately.  But, as most of us know, there’s always next year!!

Mike Thom is on one of the Navy ships heading to Haiti for the earthquake relief. He’s part of the USS Bataan fleet and should be at Haiti on January 18.  They left Little Creek, VA on January 13, picking up supplies and marines on the way.  Prayers go out for the people of Haiti as well as our rescue workers who are helping in many ways.

Brett Erwin Pankonin, 9# 3oz.,  20.5” long, was born on December 27,  2009 in Sioux Falls, SD to  Sara (Smith) and Dan Pankonin.  Brett has a big brother, Tyler, age 2.

The Murder Mystery Dinner Theater that will be held on February 13th.   Tickets for the Dinner theater are $20.00.  Call Linda at 644-3484 or Jeanne at 218-343-5059 for more information.  Sounds like a lot of fun.

Bethlehem Lutheran will be holding their Annual Meeting on Sunday, January 31st after the 10:30 AM Service.  A Pot Luck dinner will follow the meeting.  NOTE TIME CHANGE!  Bethany will have services at 9 AM on the 31st to enable pastor to attend Bethlehem’s meeting.

We had a bad incident on January 19, 2010.  Our son that lives across the road from us let his 3 dogs out in the morning around 6 AM and we think a bobcat, or cougar got the little dachshund.  The other 2 larger dogs fought it off, but the dachshund had to be put down.  He was a mangled mess.  We have heard of others that have had animals attacked around here, too, but it will be very hard to find the cat that did this.  I sure hope a person doesn’t get attacked, as this creature is getting pretty brave to come within 100 feet of a home.  So RIP Mini-Mutt, Whiley, JR.

The Annual Vintage Run will take place on Saturday, January 30th in Tamarack, MN.  If you haven’t taken in this event, please go, as it’s so interesting.

There will be an Old-fashioned Pea Soup Supper, with fresh bread and homemade bars just like Grandma used to make.  Serving from 11am to 6pm at Bethel Lutheran Church, Thursday, Feb 4 from 11am to 6pm, 29th & Washington Ave, Scanlon.  Adults: $6. Handicap parking and entrance at rear of church.

The 2010 “Welcome to the Jungle” Homecoming was held at the school on Friday, January 22nd.  Jordan Smith and RaeAnn Odegaard were crowned King and Queen by last year’s King, Tyler Burgraff and Queen, Jessica Root after a wonderful ceremony.  As the candidates marched up on stage, each one was introduced and a short bio was read about them.  The flower girl was Eliana Anderson, daughter of Greg and Jen Anderson.  She wants to become a nurse.  The Crown Bearers were Brandi Collman, daughter of Roger and Paula Collman and Nicholas Envall, son of Garret Envall and Tammy Envall all in the 1st Grade.  Brandi wants to grow up to be an artist and Nicholas plans to become a cop.

As the candidates were introduced each one gave their future plans and what they would do if they had super powers, or were an animal.    Tayah Marie Johnson, daughter of Steve and Tanya wants to save all neglected horses and she would want Brett Michaels to fall in love with her and beg her to marry him.  Jordan Thomas Smith, son of Tom and Gail plans to make a ton of money and get a hot wife.  His super power would be to teleport anywhere, whenever he wanted so he wouldn’t have to put up with the cold weather.  Cody Blake Smith, son of Don and Deanne plans to finish college and make $700,000 a year he would be a sloth, so he could be extremely lazy and no one could get on his case about it.  Ariana Del Korpela, daughter of Cary and Brenda plans to attend the College of  St. Scholastica and major in Physical Therapy.  She would be a lion because anybody can get past a dog, but nobody messes with the king of the jungle.  Nolan Mark Wester, son of Lori and Mark, plans to become a veterinarian and play college football.  His super power would be to bend stuff with his mind so he could freak people out.   RaeAnn Lynn Odegaard, daughter of Chris and Lynn plans to become an X-Ray technician and her super power would be immortal so she could live forever.  Cole Michael Johnson, son of Ann Sturgeleski and Dean Johnson plans to join the military after graduation and he would be a Wolverine because they are easy going until cornered. Ashley Brule Collman, daughter of Eric and Kathy plans to become a Mechanical Engineer and make lots of money.  She would want to be a time traveler because she would like to live in the 80’s and if she was an animal it would be to be a wolf, because she’s a one man wolf-pack!  Ryan Steve Hutar, son of Shari and Steve, plans to attend Itasca Community College to major in Mechanical Engineering.  His super power would be invisibility, so he can be in places he’s not supposed to be.  And to top the evening off, the boys beat Two Harbors by over 25 points!  A huge Thank You goes out to all who help make this event successful.

Did you know that Coffee filters have many, many uses.  Who knew!   And you can buy 1,000 of them for only a few dollars.  Here are some of the ways they are found useful.  Hope they are helpful to you, too.  Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave. Coffee filters make excellent covers.  Clean windows, mirrors, and chrome - Coffee filters are lint-free so they’ll leave windows sparkling.   Protect China by separating your good dishes with a coffee filter between each dish.  Protect a cast-iron skillet.  Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.  Apply shoe polish.  Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot.  Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes. Prevent a Popsicle from dripping.  Poke one or two holes as needed in a coffee filter.  Put a few in a plate and put your fried bacon, French fries, chicken fingers, etc on them.  It soaks out all the grease.  Keep in the bathroom.  They make great “razor nick fixers.”  As a sewing backing.  Use a filter as an easy-to-tear backing for embroidering or appliquéing soft fabrics.  Put baking soda into a coffee filter and insert into shoes or a closet to absorb or prevent odors.  Use them to wrap Christmas ornaments for storage.  Use them to remove fingernail polish when out of cotton balls.  Use as a disposable “snack bowl” for popcorn, chips, etc.  Oh yeah they are great in your coffee maker, too!

The Vikings lost another chance,  To make it to the Super Bowl Dance. The ball was fumbled too many times. It was worse than committing several crimes.  The Viking’s fans just sit in a trance.  Or (Because there is no chance to advance.)

Megan Elizabeth Arnold, daughter of Joe and Marsha Arnold plans to attend Lake Superior College to be a Dental Hygienist and she would choose to be a snake so she would never have to run again.

That’s all the news from Lake Shovelingmoreshow and Hello to all the Homecoming Candidate’s and their families.  So, I better go before I return, otherwise I’ll be here when I get back!!  (One of my dad’s favorite sayings.)
