Minutes of the Regular Meeting
of the Board of Education
Willow River ISD #577
Willow River, Minnesota
Tuesday  January 12, 2010
Following Organizational meeting
HS Library

The meeting was called to order at 6:37pm by Chair Else.  Those present were Gerard Bennett, Barb Coles, Michelle Daoust, Chair Roger Else, Tia Grutkoski, Dave Kliniski, Jr, student member Tylor Herzog and Superintendent Lynette Maas.

Motion by Kliniski, second by Daoust to approve agenda with addition of change of date for March meeting.  Carried.

Mary Weigand, Early Childhood Family Education teacher, highlighted some of the details of the upcoming preschool screening.  She noted that they will be doing more community outreach, made possible through a $1000 Grant from NLSEC.  The screening will be held Feb. 2 & 3, 2010.  Families should receive packets in the mail.  There will only one annual screening in coming years.

Motion by Coles, second by Kliniski to approve consent agenda:
A.  Approve minutes from December 1st and 8th, 2009
B.  Approve bills and claims for December, 2009
C.  Review cash balances
D.  Review Expenditure/Revenue guideline report
E.  Approve child care leave for Karissa Twining, effective approximately April 19, 2010, through the end of the                                 school year
F.  Approve child care leave for Erin Nordstrom, effective approximately May 3, 2010, through the end of the school         year
G.  Approve Pay Equity Implementation Report, effective December 31, 2009
H.  Approve membership in the Consortium for Legislation for Lake Superior Area Schools, effective for 2009-2010
I.  Approve increase from .1 FTE to .2 FTE for Loretta Jurek, Early Childhood Special Education teacher
J.  Approve Jostens Renewal Agreement for yearbook publication for 2011.  Carried

Motion by Grutkoski, Second by Coles to accept donations with much appreciation from the following:
Northern Pine Riders                         $300       5th/6th grade fishing trip
Sturgeon Lake Lions Club                $300       5th/6th grade fishing trip
WR Commercial Club                       $2700    Football field
$200       5th/6th grade fishing trip     Carried

Motion by Kliniski , second by Grutkoski to change date of the March regular meeting to March 16, 2010.  Carried

Superintendent Maas reported that a representative from the Center for Energy and Environment will be at school on February 1st to look at the system and give ideas for updating our boiler system.  There will be a multi-district staff development day on January 18 in Barnum.  Willow River, Moose Lake and Barnum are working on schedules for next year, trying to be as similar as possible.

Board member Coles inquired about the progress from the joint school board meeting with Barnum and Moose Lake.  Principals and counselors have had one meeting and another is scheduled.   There will also be another meeting with the three full boards sometime in February.

Superintendent Maas explained some of the details of the Race to the Top Grant.  She recommends that we participate in this as it could mean additional funding for the district.  Motion by Grutkoski, second by Kliniski to have Ms. Maas send in the preliminary paper work.  Carried.

Enrollment continues to be about the same.

Motion by Grutkoski, second by Kliniski to adjourn at 7:07 pm.  Carried.

Barnum Kinder-Camp

Barnum school is offering a three day mini-camp for children entering kindergarten this fall. August 3rd - 5th from 9 to 11 a.m. at the elementary school.  Instructors will be Kindergarten teachers.  Pre-registration is necessary.
